Last week I brought the youngest 4 kids on a field trip to NH Farm Museum while the older kids worked diligently at home (Stella and Leo had tennis and a teen game night to look forward to afterwards :). It was a gorgeous fall day, and we had a great time. In preparation for our tour, we read The Ox Cart Man. The kids stepped back in history and learned what it would be like to prepare the farm goods they would need to pack for a trip to Portsmouth. They started out by completing some chores...
Lux wasn't crazy about the 3 hours of driving we did and had a melt down when we arrived.
The kids ground corn while the chickens gobbled up their hard work.
Milking the cow
Rus is a patient big brother.
So glad I don't have to scrub my laundry this way
Our tour guide reminded us of Great Grandma Zobel. She did a fantastic job engaging the kids and teaching them about all of the items these families would have made by hand. She taught the moms how to dye their own yarn and color their puddings with household items, ranging from onion skins to dried beetles.
Tert got to chop the flax!
Filia carried a towel that was over a hundred years old!
Loading the wagon for the Ox Cart Man
Enjoying the Farm Animals...
I dared Tert to give this guy a kiss on the nose, just like the Ox Cart Man did with his ox.
