Rus' Birthday Party aka The Roman Feast :D From: Stella and Rus

Since we are studying ancient civilizations this year, we thought it would be fun to have a Roman party.  A great occasion for that was Rus' birthday party!  So, sending out invites to Uncle M, Uncle A, and Aunt S (view her blog here) we got busy planning...
Soon we had come up with this menu:

-Romanus Civis Sum-
Gustatio: Appetizers
Refertus Balanus: Stuffed Dates
Diabolus Eggs: Deviled Eggs
Boletus: Mushrooms
Libido Salad: Caprese Salad
Stemma Panis: Bruschetta with Garlic Bread
Prosciutto involvit Fermentum Caseus: Prosciutto wrapped mozzarella cheese
Primae Mensae: Main Course
Assus Tabula: Roast Boar
Fornax-Amicus Potatoes: Oven-Fried Potatoes
Assus Vegetable Farrago: Roasted Vegetable Medley
Parsnips Cum Cuminum: Parsnips with Cumin

Secundae Mensae: Dessert
Mellis Laganum: Honey Cakes
Cuppedia Lamnia lammina lamna: Candied Nuts
Romanorum Custodia: Roman Custard
-I am a Citizen of Rome-

Mom and I woke up on the morning of the feast and cooked and cooked and cooked.  A couple of hours before the feast, we left to go to the park and leave the house entirely empty for Mom to finish the last bits of preparation that Rus couldn't see.  ;)
When we got back from the park, we had just a few moments to don togas before our guests arrived.  Shoving the bright birthday bags in a corner, the house became entirely 'Romanized.'

We started the party off with bobbing for olives.  It was interesting, as we didn't take into account the fact that the seltzer would get flat pretty quickly.  Many tongues were stuck down into the cups in vain, but eventually Uncle M won the contest and was given what he called 'Mom's tincture.'  (a bottle of pepper juice, used to boost the immune system) ;)
Next we played pin the sword on the centurion and I (Stella) won that game.  Mom gave me a Winnie the Pooh book in Latin.  There were many laughs about that one. :D
Finally we ate.  Now-I won't even try to describe the lovely spread Mom spread out on our bar-I'll give you pictures (most of them taken by Uncle A-thanks so much!)
Here is our Roman centurion (that we pinned the sword onto ;) )
Here is our table with the prizes, laurel wreaths, swords for the centurion game, and goblets with olives, ready for olive bobbing!
Winnie Ille Pu aka Winnie the Pooh in Latin
Tert as a...uh Roman and Rus as a centurion with his new armor from Dad :)
