LOTW-Letter Y and Z with Tert and Stella

Hello Everyone.
This is my second to last post on the LOTW curriculum.  We were sad to see it end, but Tert was very proud to have completed it.  He has learned so much as you will see in the video (if I can figure out how to post it :P ) of his final letter review.
 Cutting and Tracing Fun
 Yy Match and Color Match
 Pattern time and Lacing
Graphing (he looks at the color of the zebra's stripes and fills in a box with that color for each zebra)
 Way to go Tert!
Proud Pre-K boy working on Coloring and Tracing ;)

Information about the Posts Below...

Hello Everyone! This is Stella and I just wanted to give some quick info. about the essays below.  We were told to write an essay about what we would miss if we lived in ancient times.  Leo's is titled: Personal Essay: Basketball, Ripstick, BB Gun.  I decided to do a little twist on the assignment just for fun.  It isn't from my perspective.  I titled mine: !TMI! Today's Modern Innovations (or Inconveniences?)
Also, all the highlighting and underlining and italics are required elements for the essay.  Enjoy!

!TMI!

Today's Modern Innovations (Or Inconveniences?)

Today’s networking inventions have made life extremely different from the way it used to be.  Many essential inventions didn’t exist in ancient times.  If I lived back then I would miss many innovations.  I could not live without my smartphone.  In no time I would be bored to death without Pinterest.  I would feel so disconnected without Facebook.
If I lived in the ancient world, I would miss my smartphone.  What would I do if I couldn’t get all of my emails and texts at the click of a button?  With my smartphone, I can!  I can constantly stay in touch with friends and listen to my favorite music while I do my homework.  The great games keep me amused on my way to school, in between classes, and when I get home.  It is always exhilarating to get a 1000+ score on Angry Birds or Candy Shop.  I couldn’t live without it!  In ancient times I would never be able to know the joy of listening to hours of music and becoming engrossed in a couple hour game of Temple Run.  Worst of all, I could never get instant calls and notifications from my friends, who are always on their smartphones!  I’d have to talk face to face with each of them instead of receiving texts!  Gladly, I live in the 21st century where I can pull out my smartphone and catch up on all the latest news at a few swipes of my touchscreen.
If I lived in ancient times I would miss Pinterest.  How would I keep track of the thousands of crafts I find online?  I can compete with friends to get the most pins.  Frequently, I spend hours and hours browsing through the millions of pins that other people, who are more creative than I, have posted on their colossal pages.  I have over one thousand!  I feel exhilarated when I click ‘pin’ for the hundredth time and scroll contentedly through my mile long page of crafts.  In ancient times I would never have a source of cool crafts that I could create.  Because I couldn’t have Pinterest, I would never have any lasting amusement!  I’d probably have to spend hours working on intricate mosaics or elaborate paintings.  I am very content to live in modern times when I can have an indefinite number of crafts at hand.
If I lived in ancient times I would miss Facebook.  If Facebook, which is the best networking system around, didn’t exist, I wouldn’t be able to exchange updates with people.  How would my 678 friends feel sorry for me if I couldn’t let them all know that I was having a bad day?  Eagerly, I chat for hours with them and await new notifications.  I can play round after round of Farmville and compete with my friends at gaining higher scores.  I feel like an awesome friend when I scroll through five pages of statuses and like every one.  I get swept up for hours at a time, presently catching up on the latest news.  In the ancient world I’d have to travel all over the place to get the news that I can get at the click of a button nowadays.  That would be exhausting!  Facebook is a simple way to learn everything about everything.  I am so glad I live in modern times where I can connect with my 600+ friends in moments.
Clearly, my smartphone is an awesome way to keep in touch with my friends.  Pinterest is an incredible source of the latest crafts.  Facebook lets me catch up on the latest news in a moment.  I simply could not live without these inventions.  Easily, I can talk with friends, get cool crafts, and receive updates.  Life was drab in ancient times, and I am thankful to live in modern times where innovative inventions abound!

Personal Essay: Basketball, Ripstick, and BB Gun By: Leo

I could not imagine living without my Basketball, Ripstick, and BB gun.  In ancient times, these sports were not yet invented.  Because of this, I am pleased that I don’t live in ancient times.
If I lived in Ancient times, I would miss my basketball.  I would miss it because it is a fun and challenging sport.  When I use my basketball, I like trying new skills.  I enjoy baffling the defense when I dribble behind my back or through my legs.  Repeatedly, I practice until I succeed.  I speedily dribble the ball to make a layup.  When I do, I feel elated.  In ancient times, I would have to box and wrestle etc.  I would also be forced to engage in strenuous sports every day.  I am greatly relieved that I don’t live in ancient times, because I would miss my basketball.
If I lived in ancient times, I would miss my Ripstick.  I would miss it because it is an enjoyable mode of transportation.  When I use my ripstick, I always attempt new stunts.  Relentlessly, I practice jumping like a rabbit over serpentine cracks running through the road.  When I do succeed I feel proud.  In ancient times, I would have to ride in dusty, crowded chariot races.  These races were extremely dangerous and cheating was involved.  I am thankful that I don’t live in ancient times because I would miss my ripstick.
If I lived in ancient times I would miss my BB gun.  I would miss it because it is a fun hobby.  When I use my gun, I fire it in different postures.  Carefully, I draw back the trigger and deftly knock over the targets.  In Ancient times, I would use a rough wooden bow, which is much less accurate.  I am thankful that I don’t live in ancient times because I would miss my BB gun.
I could not survive in ancient times because I would not have my Basketball, Ripstick, and BB gun.

Rus's First Adventure Story

Island Adventures
A long time ago a ship was sailing on the blue sea, and then crash! The ship was in peaces! They had landed on an island. A man came up to the ship. The man begged for the men from the boat to help them. The men were surprised! Why them? They asked,
       “What’s the matter?
“A ship came to the island the men in it stole from us! We need you to stop them!”
       “Why us?”
“Because no one else will!” Just then bang! The man on lookout yelled “a ship is
out at sea they are shooting at us!” The men agreed and went back to their ship
And used the rest of ship to scare away the ship. It worked! The ship sailed away!
The men saved the island! But the men did not know what was going to happen.
Far out at sea men came with a big ship full of men! The men in that ship
Were far braver then the men in the last ship. The man on lookout saw them
And then yelled “a other ship!” the men looked and they new they could not scare them!
But then they saw A ship it came and shot a hole in the ship! The ship was much bigger then the other ship! They were the real heroes!
the end
This story should remind us of Jesus how we can only do so much on earth
we can spread the word of god we can accomplish a little on earth
like the men in this story but Jesus can accomplish every thing like the
ship that came to the rescue!

A Post from the Alma Mater

It feels completely foreign to be writing on my own blog.  Maybe I can blame the awkwardness of typing with an index finger swaddled in bandages (never chop basil chiffonade when you're half asleep), but I'm guessing it's because this just isn't the season of blogging for me. I am so grateful for a daughter who is passionate about photography and writing; otherwise, these brimful days of teaching a houseful of vivacious young ones while plodding through a tiring pregnancy with my 6th would remain undocumented.  I keep thinking I must be extended as far as possible; then God stretches me just a bit more.  My days are challenging right now, but I am determined not to let the hilarious moments get forgotten or to wish away a single hour of this life God has blessed me with.

Recently I was enjoying some of the quotes I kept from my older kids' toddler days and wondering if all I ever did was follow them around with my camera and notebook.  I decided to start another yellow Post-It on my fridge to capture some of the funny things my littlest ones have been coming out with.  Before I knew it, it was full of cuteness I just had to share:

Rus is an analytical sponge for details like his daddy and likes to share his knowledge in painstaking detail.  He was reading the Bible story about Belshazzar and when he got to the part where he served wine in the consecrated goblets, he said to Tert, “Okay, let me go back and explain about the Babylonian Captivity of Judah so this makes more sense to you.”  Tert was wiggling like crazy but humored his big brother until he got to the question and answer part.  Rus asked him what the writing on the wall meant, and he said, “Mene, Mene, Minie, Mo…  Did it mean CATCH THE TIGER BY THE TOE?”

I couldn't resist showing off a bit during my Latin lesson w/ Rus by rattling off the Lord's Prayer with impeccable pronunciation. When I asked Rus if he was impressed that I still remembered it (having taught it quite a few years ago to the older ones), he shrugged and said, "No, you can say it like that because you know all the dipthongs."

Rus beamed as he showed me his first attempt at caligraphy:  "Mom!  Look at my CHEMISTRY!"

Tert to Rus:  "Hey, can you play with me?"
Rus:  "No, I kind of have a lot on my hands."

Tert:  Came in from playing with his siblings outside and announced, "Mom, I've been keeping the kids contained."

At age 2 1/2, Filia is growing quite articulate.  She makes the most endearing comments about my growing belly and the little "Sisser" she's sure is in there.  She explains in detail how she's going to hold the baby and what she will feed him/her.  The other day she pulled out her old "piece of fire" (her name for the pacifier) to share with the baby.  Although she is a precocious big sister, she still nurses a few times a day and night. In the morning, she knows that she must recite the answers to 13 or so  catechism questions before she can nurse, and she'll sometimes throw in the Lord's Prayer or 23rd Psalm for good measure.  The other day she asked, "Mom, can you nurse me while you're doing Omnibus with Sissy?"

Stella caught Filia writing on my post-it notes and asked her what she was doing.  She answered, "I'm doing my perforations (school preparations)."

Filia has discovered that our lab, Cora, functions like a vacuum cleaner with dog food and will eat indefinitely.  Occasionally, we'll find her feeding Cora without permission, and she will explain, "I'm being SOOO helpful!  I'm just feeding Cora God's food (dog food)."

Filia was staring at my great big tummy (at her eye level).  She looked up at me with a mixture of curiosity and compassion and said, "Mama, did God give you that belly button?"
