I had a lot of fun visiting the newest remakes of the Nina and the Pinta, the ships that Christopher Columbus sailed on to the New World! I went with my brothers, Ethan, Aidan, Connor, and Brandan. We were all fascinated by the two ships! Here are some interesting facts about the ships. There was a ship named the Santa Maria too, but there where two reasons why the people who made the ships did not make her. One she was too big to make through the waterways, back to Europe. Two, because Christopher Columbus did not like her because she was very slow and clumsy, so she just didn't do for the trip back to Europe. Also, they covered the ships in tar, because the tar was water resistant, so they thought that it would be the best material to put on the ships. The Nina had 24 people that sailed on it, the Pinta had 26, and the Santa Maria had 40. The remakes of the ships that were built were built by Valencia, Brazil by eighth generation Portuguese shipwrights. It took 32 months and 20 men for the Pinta, and it the Pinta took 36 months. The first voyage took a little over 7 months, with the actual crossing to the Bahamas being 33 days. Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa. He died on May 20, 1506 in Valladolid, Spain. The captains of the Nina and the Pinta were Brothers Martin and Vincent Pinzon who were from Palos, Spain. That field trip was very interesting and fun!
