Christmas Peppermint Red Velvet and Chocolate Cake Pops (Siobhan)

~Christmas Cake Pops~

This year for Christmas, I wanted to try a couple different variations of cake pops. I went to Michaels Craft Store and got red candy melts and white candy melts as well as a Wilton treat bags set. We also picked up a red velvet cake mix and a chocolate cake mix. I got 100 cake pops out of two cake mixes. These were wonderful Christmas gifts!
First, I made the cakes and let them cool completely. Then I mixed them with frosting until I was able to roll the mixture into firm, moist balls. Then I put them in the freezer for about 20 minutes.

After they were set, I set up my 'melting pot station.' The Wilton melting pot is absolutely amazing. It keeps all of the candy very evenly melted. I always add a bit of vegetable shortening to thin out the candy melts, and it works perfectly for dipping. I dipped half of the sticks in white candy melts for the red velvet cake pops and half of them in red candy melts for the chocolate cake pops. Then I put the pops in the freezer again for 20 more minutes.
Next came decorating! My first type of cake pop was a Red Velvet Peppermint Cake Pop. I simply dipped the pops in white candy melts and sprinkled crushed peppermint over the pops while the candy was still wet.
My second type of cake pop was a Chocolate Cake Pop. I decorated these in a couple different ways. For the above cake pop, I dipped the entire cake pop in white candy and then dipped the bottom half of it a second time in red candy once the white candy had completely hardened.
For this cake pop, I dipped it into red candy, then white candy, then red candy, sprinkling crushed peppermint  around the middle.
The final two cake pops I made used drizzling and marble techniques. I used the Wilton Drizzling Scoop for both of these. For the above look, I dipped the pop into red candy and allowed the candy to dry and harden completely. Then I drizzled white candy melts over the red candy.
For the marbleized look you see below, drizzle the white candy over the red candy while the red candy is still wet. This will allow it to melt right into the red candy.
Merry Christmas!!
