Field Trip to American Textile Museum

      Hi. I am Rus. Filia, Tert, Leo and I went to the American Textile Museum in Massachusetts. We brought some things to listen to like Jonathan Park to pass the time away because we had a long drive to the museum. It was a little over an hour. Thankfully listening to something helped us not to be bored. We drove through a lot of construction to get out of our Lane. They are doing piping on our road, so they needed to rip up the road. They did not pave it, so it was hard to get over the road. They have holes all over the place so we need to be careful to get out of the road.

       Next we needed to find the parking lot. We accidentally went in the wrong parking lot, so when we walked around the building we found out that it was the wrong place. We were in the parking lot next to the museum's parking lot. When we got inside we found our group. After that we broke up into smaller groups. Then we all went down to a class room. We heard all about how the Silk Road stretched from Italy to China. We saw things that might have been traded on the silk road.

       Then we went back to the class room to play a game. It was a game that you had to pretend that you were traders on the silk road. You traded in your goods to get other things. There were signs that showed you how many points your goods were worth and how many points other goods were worth. This is an example

        I also loved when we toured the museum. We saw the easiest way to lift 500 pounds! We also saw what the general store would look like and the inside of a house. We even went up and saw a lot of silk dresses. I think that this was one of my favorite field trips.

The Life of a Plastic Bottle

The Life of a Plastic Bottle

                One day a bottle was lying on the side of the road when suddenly...WHAM!

                "Hey watch were your going!" exclaimed the bottle.

                "Sorry," yelled the other bottle to be heard over the traffic, "I was just thrown out of a truck, and I can tell you that was not fun."

                "Oh no, a truck! Roll!" yelled the first bottle."

                I can't! It is a huge drop into the sea!" (It was actually a river but bottles are so small they can't tell the difference).

                 Then the truck flew by blowing the bottle into the river. The bottle floated away with the river until he was swept onto the shore and right into a group of girls. The girls were cleaning up after their picnic when one of them saw the bottle. She yelled, "Another one over here!" A girl rushed over with the recycling and scooped up the bottle and threw him in recycling . Then she put the bin in their car and drove away. The bottle was worried...

                "I am going to be thrown out. Lots of things, for example a bottle, will not deteriorate for millions of years.  It is thrown out and stays there indefinitely." Then the car came to a sudden stop, and then the bin was picked up with the bottle and put in the center. After going through the recycling and melting process, he came out as a sippycup.

"Oh no," he thought, "I know people throw out sippycups!"  Later he was sold to a lady because she had a baby who needed a sippycup. She would not throw him out because she had seen the landfill and how much beautiful land was wasted to make room for all that rubbish to be dumped.

                Later the baby took the sippycup, lifted it up to his mouth, and threw it on the floor. This happened over and over again until one day the boy did not need his sippycup, so they put the sippy cup in the recycling.

"I can't wait to see what I am going to be next!" exclaimed the bottle.

Paper Pumpkin Craft By: Siobhan aka Stella

Today I have a paper pumpkin craft to share with you. I got it from the Confessions of a Homeschooler site.  I made them with Tert (1st grade) and Filia (preschool.) The craft has some more 'advanced' steps (like cutting, hole-punching, etc.) so Tert helped me with those, and Filia helped decorate them.

Supplies: 

Orange and Green Construction Paper

Ruler

Scissors

Hole Punch 

Brads

Permanent Marker

Step 1: Mark one inch sections on a piece of orange construction paper

Step 2: Make lines down the width of the paper using a ruler

Step 3: Cut out the one inch strips

Step 4: Take eight strips, stack them on top of each other and hole punch through all of them 

*Note: You can use six strips, but it doesn't work as well as eight

Step 5: Trace and cut out a leaf on a piece of green construction paper

Step 6: Push a brad through the leaf and the orange strips

Step 7: Lay out your strips leaf side down

Step 8: Take the strips that are across from each other and pull them up into the center of the pumpkin. Hole punch them all together and secure with a brad.

Step 9: Flip so the leaf is on top and decorate with your permanent marker!

 Tert finished his first year of soccer this past Saturday. He loved it and scored many goals over the season. We are so proud of him!
