Field Trip to Pottery Studio

Today the big kids and I left Baby Boy with Daddy and headed to a pottery studio to meet some friends. The woman who owns the business had agreed to give the children their own personal lesson on a pottery wheel. It was beyond belief! The kids got 2 hours of instruction and hands-on assistance with their own projects - all for the price of $10! It was so fun to see their enjoyment and fascination with the process. All 6 of the kids were perfectly behaved and listened so attentively to the woman as she taught them about types of clay, the process of making pottery items, and the proper way to use a potter's wheel... My friend who joined us there brought her 3-month baby girl who fell asleep in my arms (despite the rude kicks of her little friend in my belly). The woman offered to do a print of the baby's hand and foot for free. The same offer has been extended to us if we bring back our new baby when we pick up our pottery pieces.

I'm so thankful for the flexibility of homeschooling that allows us to fit in neat outings like this.

April Fools?!

I'm not kidding... These photos were taken on April 1, 2008 in our backyard. It has snowed twice since then. The kids were elated to discover a muddy little patch of dead grass in the corner of their yard. Spring can't come soon enough!!

Hanging in There (as I'm Hanging Out...)

Yes, it has been a while since I've written or posted any pictures. I think I'm going to put a stop to the pregnancy glamour shots. My figure is beyond startling, and I just can't bear to hear anyone else remind me of how enormous I am. I've begun to avoid eye contact with people when I make my weekly rounds to the grocery store or gymnastics. I'm either met with gushing expressions of sympathy or shameless gaping. I can't quite believe that I'm the most massive pregnant Mama who ever was or that I'll be the only one to endure an eternal pregnancy, but that's sure how I feel...

Yesterday (at my 38/39 week checkup) I told the doctor that I've been finding it very difficult to sleep. Similar to my first pregnancy, I have been having frequent, severe contractions whenever I lie down. She acknowledged the difficulty of this and told me that I should wait to give her a call until I've had an hour's worth of contractions that are so severe that I can't speak. It wasn't until I shared this tidbit with Stephen later that evening that the absurdity of the comment truly struck me. I realized that, if I waited that long to head to the hospital, I'd be stuck cleaning up my own afterbirth! With my last natural delivery, I only experienced about 15 minutes of contractions that were so severe I couldn't speak. Then Buddy made his hasty entrance into the world. My sister's response to the doctor's advice was priceless. She said, "...so if your doctor picks up the phone and there's silence on the other end, she can assume that it's you in labor?!"

On a more postive note...we have been so blessed by recent help and encouragement from family. Stephen's parents fixed our plumbing so we could enjoy showers once again. My mom has sacrificed many of her days off teaching to help us with our walls and surprised me with a freezer full of scrumptious meals last week. I could barely hold back the tears when I called to thank her. My brother in law, Tom, skillfully patched our nursery walls for us, and my other brother in law, Mark, just called to offer us yet another one of his Saturdays to help with our bedroom floor. These demonstrations of love (along with the encouraging e-mails, phone calls, prayers for our baby's safety, hand me downs from friends...) remind me of how much I have to be thankful for. This Little One is truly blessed to be born into such a gracious circle of extended family and friends...

Book Report On Sarah Whitcher By: Sis Age: 8

~Sarah Whitcher~

I am writing a little book report about Sarah Whitcher. We read her book and it was great! (It's a true story too!) My three favorite parts of this book are the family's faith, the adventure in this story, and the fact that it is in my state.

First, I think that it is amazing how they could have faith even when they couldn't find their little girl after five days.

Second, I think it's neat that this story has all sorts of adventure in it. For example, when she found that little cave and found a bear inside it and thought that the bear was her own big dog, Ollie.

Third, the story was put in my state. I haven't read any books that are in my area before this.

I think that kids should read this book in school!

Easter By: Sis Age: 8

WOW! What a fun time we've had for our Easter celabration!
It's hard to believe that it's Spring either!
We still have so much snow!
The first Easter celabration we had was the one with our extended family!
It was the day before Easter . . .

The celebration was in the evening! It was at Grandma's house! We had lots of fun!
So in the evening we set off (Mom, Buddy, Aidan, and I) with a ham to bring that we got at Shaw's! When we got there Grandma was all ready for us! We just quickly moved the table and then everything was ready! Grandma got out the Easter Egg set and then we got out the eggs! We had 15 eggs. So we started making them! Once they were all made we got out the stickers. Then we put a little border around them!
We had lots of fun! Then our cousins came! All the girls told stories. Then we had a dinner of squash, ham, cucumbers, lemonade, little plastic Easter eggs filled with jelly beans and little Hershey Kisses, and best of all Mint Icecream and cake!
(It was Grandpa's B-day!) Happy Birthday Grandpa!
Then we played games and then we thought that it would be cool if we could watch a LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRE!
So we watched it and when we finished everybody got ready to go home!

The following day was Easter!
We got up and got little gifts for each of us!
Bubblegum crayons, candy dispensers, glow-worms and more . . .
For supper we got . . .

Artichokes, squash, ham, broccoli casserole, strawberries with cool whip and angel food-cake!

HAPPY EASTER TO ALL!

"Mommy, Can we Pop the Baby?"

Baby Boy made this suggestion, offering to put me out of my misery by popping my tummy like a big balloon.  Will I survive 3 more weeks of hugeness?

This week marked the grand completion of our bean and corn study. A few weeks ago, the kids covered some leaves with Vaseline (one on the top and one on the bottom) to see where the stomata (breathing holes) are located. Turns out that they are on the bottom. We also covered a leaf with foil, blocking the sun and preventing photosynthesis. You can see that it shriveled up and died.

It was so neat to see the eagerness with which the kids tackled these experiments. Each time grandparents would come for a visit, they'd run for their science journals and update them on their diagrams and notes.

Going to Michael's By: Sis Age: 8

Mom, Buddy, and I were going out on some errands!
The most exciting thing was that we had heard that once a year at Michael's they have a free family craft day!
We decided that we'd find out more about it!
We got a March Newsletter from Michael's and Mom put the stuff that looked most fun on the calender!
So we decided that we'd try it!
(Last year we found out about it and decided we'd go to that!)
So as I'm going to write that's the 1st most exciting thing!
(We have a 2nd) . . .
So we hopped into the car and drove off!
The first errand we had to do was go get out oil changed!
It was surprisingly quick so we decided we'd go to the mall!
We got a little something there for Grandma!
Then we were off to Michael's . . .

When we got there we immediately found Station 1.
There we got a special kind of clay!
(We bought the same product!)
This is how I made my wand . . .
I took a wooden stick and I took some white clay and covered the stick from 1 end!
(I left about 2" and I'll tell you why in just 1 sec.)
After I took some purple clay and put a little bit 1'' apart.
Then with the extra room I took a pipe cleaner and wrapped it around the stick into a heart shape! Then i simply just mixed purple and white clay together and I left it to dry for 3 days!
CAN YOU GUESS WHAT THAT CRAFT I MADE WAS?
ANSWER: A MAGIC WAND!
Station 2:

At the next station we made a card for a friend!
I decided to make mine for Grandma as a thank you for all of her help scraping our walls!
There we bought some crayons with paint inside them!
They don't make any mess!
If you want to use them you simply tap them on a piece of paper and then you can draw!
Station 3:

We made doorhangers here! There were special markers that we colored on paper with,
(the doorhangers) the paper had bumpy edges and a big hole so that we could hang them on the door!
I made 4 doorhangers for my fam. and Buddy made 3 for Grandpa's B-day!
Shh! Don't tell!!!!
___________________________________________________________________________________
That's the best I can do writing about Michael's but then we had the 2nd best part . . .

The Creative Juices are Flowing...

Jack and the Beanstock...

Wow!!! We're on our last week of TOPS Green Thumbs Experiments. The bean plants have grown like crazy on our windowsill. The kids are keeping up with their daily diagrams and journal entries. Today we learned about how plants cells stretch and grow (using a rubber band with lines to illustrate). We had marked our plant stems 2weeks ago and discovered today that bean plants grow from the top while corn plants grow from the bottom. Is that cool or what?

Saturday Fun

Yesterday morning, the big kids and I took off to run some errands while Daddy and Baby Boy worked on the construction site (a.k.a. Home Sweet Home). Lately I've been searching for any excuse to escape the smell of wet paint, plaster dust and splintery plywood floors."

Sis and Buddy were delighted when I told them that I'd bring them to Michae's Craft Store's annual Crayola Craft day. We attended last year, and it was a blast. Once again, the kids went from station to station, experimenting with all of the latest and greatest art products and creating their own magical clay wands, painted cards and bedroom door hangers. I couldn't resist picking up a few fun, mess-free items for Baby Boy. (That's one great thing about homeschooling. You can rationalize some of these splurges as "school supply expenses." He's going to love the chunky, crayon-shaped paints and the bright papers with markers that look as though they are "popping" out of the page.

In case this snow hangs around, we will be armed and ready to occupy ourselves cheerfully with the treats I found. Stay tuned for pictures...

9th Anniversary (Megan)

Stephen and I just celebrated our 9th Wedding Anniversary. I had hoped to dig out our ancient wedding photos, scan them and put together a neat slide show, but there have been other projects stealing my attention. In the meantime, I wanted to include my favorite wedding photo and a picture of the gorgeous, 9 roses he surprised me with on our special day.

Grandma and Grandpa come! By: Sis Age: 8

Grandma, Grandpa, and Uncle Ron came to our house March 2!
We had lots of fun!
Here's the story . . .
Dad and I were out on the driveway making sure all of the shoveling was done so that Grandma's and Grandpa's car would fit!
They came and they could not even believe how much snow we had gotten because they live in MA so they had less snow there!
(Also they have a little dog named Kirby!)
They came and when they got in they gave Mom and Dad beautiful flowers for there anniversary.
They were very pretty!
Then they gave Buddy some Moon-Sand that later I will tell you what it is!
Grandma has always had beautiful dolls!
She gave me 3 of them!
I love them!
I was very excited!
At this time Mama's Baby was napping but then just this moment he woke up and Mom got him!
Then Grandma gave him a little puppy which he named Dodger-Kirby!
(My other Grandma has a little dog named Dodger and then Kirby is my other Grandma's dog!)
He thought those would be good names!
(Grandpa had come to fix our plumbing so that we could have a shower!)
He started right away and when he told everybody he was going to turn the water off everybody HAD to go to the bathroom!
Then after that we were brave enough to try MOON-SAND!
As you will see in the pics. MOON-SAND=Big Mess!
We first kneaded it then shaped it and then we scraped off the extras and it appeared that Buddy had done the best job but then we had a test and we made a little ball and Buddy dropped his shape on it but it broke I tryed it mine didn't!
I wonder why?
We then realized we had made a mess and I said "Well by the end of this month all of the Moon Sand will be in the vaccumm!"
We cleaned up talked a while and then Grandma and I went down to the basement because she wanted to see my Webkinz room!
Then she showed me hers and when we went upstairs Buddy gave Grandma and Grandpa a letter!
We then had a delicious supper and chocolate cake with cookies for desert!
Then Grandpa said that he had fixed our plumbing and were we happy!
Then he cleaned up all his stuff and good-byes were said!
WE HAD LOTS OF FUN!

Our Trip To The Library! By: Sis Age: 8

We went to the library yesterday!
We were really excited!
(It was another story-hour that we think was the best of all because we've been to all the others!)
We quickly finsished school and hurried up to get to the library!
Mom got a coffee on the way and munchkins for us and then she got milk!
After when we got there we hurried quickly!
We went over there and the librarian told us to wash our hands!
After that she pulled out 3 Dr. Seuss recipes and then she took out the first one!
The recipe called for some juice and some soda!
We poured them in 8 cups and then moved on to the next recipe!
All we had to do was pour Strawberry Yogurt on a plate and put strawberries on the side!
After that we took out the next recipe!
The little cakes you can get at the store to make Strawberry Shortcakes with we took those out and we put Pudding in the middle and took caramel sauce!
Then we put grapes on the top of the caramel sauce!
(The caramel sauce makes the grapes stick!)
We ate all of the recipes which everybody loved while the librarian read us 2 Dr. Seuss stories!
Then we grabbed a couple of books and we went home happy!

What A Sunny Day Out Side! By: Sis Age: 8

WOW! It was really sunny out-side yesterday!
I got all my school done and Mom said we could go for a walk!
We were very excited!
Mama's Baby wanted to go out and ride his bike Mom said that we were just going to go for a walk!
He said "OK!" And grabbed his boots and his snow pants!
Then we got all our stuff on and took our sled (it had a rope on it that we pulled it with!) which we pretended was a puppy and it was so hot out we took our hats and mittens off and ran into the puddles!
I just took the hats and mittens and threw them in the sled!
We laughed when we went through a deep puddle because the sled was just like a boat!
It didn't even scrape against the pavement!
We got on the snowdrifts and walked on them!
Mama's Baby was so happy because he loves walks!
He hasn't had one since last fall!
We jumped in puddles and stopped to run through them and then we came and went up to a little loop!
We saw a HUGE puddle and quickly ran through it and we made such a big splash Mama's Baby almost fell over!
We came up to a HUGE snowdrift!
We slid down the snowdrifts climbed up again and slid all over again!
It was really fun!
We did that and Buddy said "Why don't we go a little further?"
Everyone agreed and we went further!
After that Buddy wanted to head home and so all of us went home!
When we reached home we wondered how Mama's Baby could've gone that far?
It was about a 1 mile!

Some Cute Quotes and Anecdotes...

I've been scribbling down some funny, sweet and shocking things the kids have come out with the past few weeks. Hope they put a smile on your face.

The other day, I got Baby Boy up from his nap. He stared at me with the most adoring expression, wrapped his arms around around my neck and said, "I loves you, Mommy!" That was the first time he told me that without any prompting.

Our mail lady is very particular about our shoveling habits. Many times she has withheld our mail when we haven't met her specific criteria. At first Sis was defensive of her and reminded us that she could hardly be expected to deliver our mail when she doesn't wear snowpants. Well, when Sis' birthday packages weren't delivered on time, she began to lose patience. The other day she went out to inspect our mailbox area and came back with the confident report that it looked just fine. She added, "Mommy, if the mail lady doesn't deliver today, then she is just making a point!"

We were visiting Grandma in the hospital a few weeks ago. I was telling her how great she looked. Buddy inspected her with concern and commented, "Actually, Grandma, I think you still look pretty terrible."

The kids have shown an unusual amount of interest in the upcoming Presidential election. They were especially curious to know who was their Daddy's first choice for a candidate. Upon hearing that he was a fan of Fred Thomson, Sis asked WHY Daddy didn't vote for him in our state's primary. Without pausing, she answered her own question... Oh, yeah; I know. Because, if you HAD voted for him, you would have been the only one!"

Sis and her cousin Mo were riding home from gymnastics. Mo said, "I sure can't wait to get home because I'm going to have a nice, hot shower." Sis answered, "Yeah, when I get home, I'm going to have a COLD bath." (Suffice it to say that our plumbing is still broken; even the kids are getting sick of baths!)...

We have started a sweet family tradition where we cozy up with an episode of "Little House on the Prairie" in the evenings. I like to lie on the couch with my head in Stephen's lap while the kids cuddle up around us. Even Baby Boy watches in rapt attention and babbles his own commentary now and then. Well, one night Stephen was working late, so Baby Boy took it upon himself to take his daddy's place. He sat in Stephen's spot, got a pillow, planted a kiss on my cheek and said, "Put you head in my lap, Mommy."

Buddy made up a silly rhyme about his dinner. Sis, without missing a beat, said, "Well, hello, Dr. Seuss! I don't believe we've met
before."

Baby Boy is amazed by my growing belly. He refers to my tummy with the name we've chosen for our baby if it's a boy. Every now and then he'll ask me to "open it up" (meaning lift my shirt) and show him how big my tummy is getting. After a fit of giggles, he says, "Put it away, Mommy!"

Buddy was commenting on how he would treat the woman he'd marry some day. He referred to this mystery girl as "the one who would be a lover to me..." Where on earth did that come from?!?!

Stephen and Baby Boy have a special tradition where Daddy gives him bear hugs and Baby Boy laughs. When Stephen was in California, I tried my best to provide these hugs in his absence. Every time I squeezed him, Baby Boy would look at me and say, "It no works, Mama." As soon as Daddy returned, he greeted Baby Boy with a bear hug. Baby Boy grinned and said, "It worked!!"

Baby Boy tries to join in on our all of our "grown up" activities. First thing each morning, he puts on his sneakers and grabs his 1-pound dumbbells to "exseesize with Mommy!" It melts my heart to see how hard he tries to keep up with the various movements, swinging his little arms and saying, "forward and back, forward and back..." It reminds me of his Big Sis when she was that age. When she was barely 2, she'd do my Cindy Crawford workout video with me each day and, when we completed it, would comment, "No guilt today, Mommy!"

Baby Boy also likes to answer some of our Children's shorter catechisms during Bible time. He only knows 2 or 3 so far but enjoys the encouragement/praise that Buddy and Big Sis lavish upon him.

When we say our Pledge of Allegiance, Baby Boy runs for his little American flag and waves it for us. The other day, he shocked us by rattling off the beginning of the pledge with us. We had no idea that he had been listening that carefully! Now, if he can just learn his multiplication tables through observation, that would be great!

Baby Boy came downstairs and told me that the kids were doing their "Iddypendent work."

Baby Boy: "Mama! The snow plow makes me hyper!" (He meant scared)

Poor Baby Boy has had a viscious diaper rash. He keeps begging me to put "ice cream" on his bum. He means Desitin.

The other day, the kids were hunting for leaves in the snow. Baby Boy handed me this wispy, green thing and announced, "Izz a MONOCOT again!!" Those moments make homeschooling worth the tears and sweat!

The Truth Behind the Tale...

Stephen and Buddy really are planning to go ice fishing tomorrow with some guys from church. This will be Buddy's first fishing experience EVER, and he is so excited... I'm packing a special picnic lunch for them (complete with hot dogs they can grill outside). Their plan inspired Sis to write a "Tall Tale," one of her English assignments this week. She was encouraged to use exaggeration words, to hook her reader with her introduction, and to leave her reader asking a question at the end. I thought she did a great job.

Poor Baby boy keeps asking if he can go ice fishing too. He is in complete denial that this won't be possible and keeps talking confidently about their plans. Any mention that he is too small this year brings on a torrent of protests and tears. We'll have to think of a fun alternative plan at home. Maybe I'll even bring out the evil finger paints?!

Buddy and Stephen Go Ice-Fishing
__________________________________________________
Buddy and Stephen went on the most extrordinary fishing trip of their lives.
Buddy was going to go fishing and was excited but he wished Stephen could go also.
(Stephen didn't have a license so he couldn't go. Buddy didn't need one.
"WOW!" Buddy said. "I can't wait!"
They were quietly driving having NO clue what they were going to have as an adventure that day . . .
They got there and set up their fishing stuff! Buddy put the bait on the hook and waited for 15 min. until all of the sudden there was a bite!
"WOW!" "Looks like a HUGE one!" Buddy said. But when he pulled it up there was a little tiny fish that quickly jumped under water. "Darn!" they both said at once.
They waited for a long time and went to look for a better spot.
It was amazing because as soon as they sat down they got a 'bite'!
Buddy pulled it up and instead of a fish there was a big Treasure Chest!
And in there was a HUGE container of fish and tools to get the scales off and directions!
There was Hot Cocoa also! They quickly hopped in the car and went back home!
The story was told and what could the others guess?

My Birthday Party (My=Sis) By: Sis Age: 8 now!

My birthday party ended up on my real birthday!
And best of all we had a sleepover party!
I turned 8 years old along with my cousin!
She turned 12!
We had lots of fun!
Mom and I made mac-and-cheese and then after that we made cup-cakes that were shaped like hearts because my birthday party was the day after Valentine's Day!
(The cup-cakes we were bringing for us to decorate at my party!)
After that we both made some Chocolate Chex Mix!
We both got ready and I got into my party dress and Mom put on my bow!
After that we got all of our stuff together!
Then we drove off to my Aunt's house!
When we got there we put in the Mac to bake and then we waited for my other cousin who hadn't arived yet.
Then after she arrived we all played in the rooms a little while and then blew up balloons and Grandma called us for a treausure hunt.
When we got the 1st clue we found a bag which Grandma said that along the way as we found favors that we could put them in the bag!
We found all the favors and finally it was my turn which was the last one and when I found the place instead of favors we found all of our b-day presents!
Then I got a Cinderella princess doll and a Snow White princess doll and now I have a full collection of all of my princesses that are as big as the size of Barbies!
That is 6 dolls now!
Then I got a huge pillow which was as big as me!
Then from Mama's Baby he gave me a gift-card!
And from Mom and Dad I got Kissables which will go perfectly with my gift-card!
(The gift-card is to get 1 kid movie at Movie Gallery!)
Then I got a hoola-hoop!
And I got a cool thing that looks like a calculator but is really a thing you can play word games on!
And then Grandma gave me Little House On The Prarie Season 2!
That's all the gifts!
I've played with them all already!
They are all great!
After that we had supper and we had lots of fun decorating cup-cakes!
Then everybody went home but only all the kids stayed who were staying for the sleepover!
We all went upstairs and changed into our PJ's and got our hearts that we had gotten as a favor!
We sat down and flipped the guide for Little House and finally found one that everybody wanted to watch!
We sat down and watched it then found a 2nd one and the rest of us played house while the others watched it!
We all got tired of playing and came down and picked another Little House!
Then we watched it and Aunt Krista came and watched the rest of it with us and when we looked at the clock it said 10:00!
We quickly rolled out our sleeping bags jumped in and went to sleep!
Then in the morning my little cousin and I were the only ones up so we quietly talked and whispered until we finally got up and got dressed!
Then we woke up my oldest cousin and we played school!
The others finally got up and we had muffins!
Then we got all our stuff togther and happily waited for our parents!

Also my other Grandma and Grandpa gave me a new Webkinz and a pretty new Bible!
Also a $1 bill!
THANKS, everyone!

A P.S. About Uncle Adam...

It was Stephen's final evening away on business, and my little brother, Adam, came to rescue me. The week had been more stressful than usual with the added responsibility of schooling and caring (around the clock) for 3 kids who desperately missed their daddy. On Wednesday, we decided to invite Uncle Adam over for chocolate chip pancakes and root beer floats. He spent some fun time with each of the kids and boosted our moods immensely. Sis told him that she was "SUPPOSED to find a famous person to interview for school" but that she guessed he would be okay. After dinner, the kids told him that they were going to watch an episode of "Little House on the Prairie." Without missing a beat, Adam started in on his side-splitting impersonations of all the characters from that show. Buddy especially was amazed by his ability to perfectly capture their personalities and voices.

Later that week, Adam told Buddy that he had a little surprise for him. It was a recording of him having a conversation with Mr. Edwards, Doc. Baker and Reverend Alden from "Little House." I popped the tape in the car for the kids and almost had to pull over I was laughing so hard. Buddy's reactions ranged from hysterical laughter to awed silence. It was so good it was almost freaky... We all agreed that the best part was when they locked out Reverend Alden so he wouldn't start in on his favorite tune, "Bringing In the Sheaves."

Tonight we're taking full advantage of Daddy's presence. I have begun our Bean and Corn study in Science, and Stephen and the kids are busily creating a makeshift balance for weighing the various seeds and sprouts. I told him that I could handle the rest of the experiments, but was not in the frame of mind to tackle this one after an 8 hour school day. Daddies are just plain more fun anyway.

We'll keep you posted on the progress of our little greenhouse and will plan to share some pictures along the way...

Our Field Trip to the Montshire Museum By: Sis Age: 7

We went to the Montshire Museum yesterday!
We had lots of fun . . .

We woke up and quickly got ready and then packed lunch and got all of our stuff together and finally we were ready and went outside where Miss Kathy was waiting!
(Miss Kathy is my gymnastics teacher and she was leading us to the Montshire Museum!)
So we got in the car and started the long drive to Vermont from NH!
We finally reached there and we were going around a little loop because we didn't know that was the Main Entrance!
So we got out of the car laughing and decided to leave our lunch stuff in the car and finally were ready!
Miss Kathy said that she would meet us after we finished getting ready!
After that we went inside and waited for our group!
Once we got our group together we gave our money to Miss Kathy and she payed!
(It was only $4.00 to go to the Museum for our whole family!
We were surprised and excited!
Then after that we went and quickly started to do our big trip . . .
We went over to the coatroom and while Mom was hanging up our coats we saw a cool ball thing where we pulled down a lever that said READY . . .
then we pushed a lever up and down that said SET . . .
And then we pressed a button that said go and tryed to get it into the two little hoops!
After that Mom and I went over to the fish while Buddy and Dad tryed to get the ball into one of the hoops!
They succeeded so they came over and looked at the fish!
Then after that we looked at the little pictures of the fish and tryed to find them in the fish-tank!
Then after that we looked at some (what can you guess we saw?)
TURTLES!
We saw little ones!
Then after that we went and saw a chameleon thing where if you hold up the red glass you see spots and if you hold up the green glass you see big spots!
Then we went and saw a bike and you had to peddle the bike all the way until you had made enough energy that an elevator would have used!
Although it would take days to do it!
So after that we went to a thing that was a big wheel with a chain running down it and if you tug on the chain then the chain moves in zig-zag patterns!
After that we went to a cool thing where you can take a little object with a magnet that is inside the tank and pull it around to make all different kinds of cool waves!
After that we went to what was our favorite part!
The Bubble Area!
We and we blew bubbles with one thing and went over and a woman showed us how to take a thing make a bubble out of it and hold a little 'window' and hold it to the bubble and put our hand through it!
And then with the same thing we put our hands in water soapy water and we stuck our hands through the bubble and it didn't pop!
After that we took a big hoola hoop and then we slowly-slowly took it up and then it made a big bubble and then got smaller and smaller and eventually popped!
After that we went to a thing where you could hold bubbles and they wouldn't pop!
And after that we went to a thing which made wind and then it would pull a little boat around in circles!
After that we went to a thing with little tubes that you could hook together and then we put the ball through it and it goes through the tunnel and pops out!
It was cool!
And then after that we I went to a thing which Buddy was doing he was moving sand around with a little crank!
After that I went to a thing where you spin a ball and try to make it do a little figure eight!
After that I called Mom and showed it to her!
After that we went over to a thing which had a wrench and we spinned a little crank!
And then when you did the little crank the wrench spun like crazy!
It was really funny!
After that we went to a thing where you spin pennies and they go into a little hole!
And we went to a cool thing where water drips!
And we made it so that it looked like the water was going up!
Then we went upstairs and saw a moose!
We then went over to a cool mirror and we stood with our nose to it and lifted one leg and then we looked like we were flying!
It was fun!
Then we went over to a thing with a hair-dryer and we blew it on a star and we pressed our hand on it and then held it up to TV and it looked like we had a star on our hand!
After that we went to a thing with cool blocks and then we made something with it so that the ball could roll down it and so it would not fall the whole time!
We did and it worked!
It was cool!
After that Mom and I went to a computer and clicked on ultrasound and it showed all kinds of stuff the baby was doing!
(Even sucking his/her thumb!)
It was really cute!
Then we went and saw a beautiful butter-fly!
And Buddy and I then got our picture taken in front of a beautiful thing with all kinds of butterflies and birds!
Then we went to a cool thing where balls were moving all around!
And then we went and took paper drew half of a picture and then drew the other half of the picture on the other side!
For Example: . . .
I drew a birthday cake with candles on it!
And then I taped on a straw and spinned it really fast and it looked like a birthday cake with candles on it!
It was cool!
And after that we found Dad and saw a computer with a microscope you could move all around so that you could see all of the ants!
And after that we went and saw the real skin of a snake!
And after that we saw a cool cat thing where you could move your hand back and forth so that while you and your friend sat down you could move your hand against a board and it looked like you were putting your hand in front of your friends face and you weren't!
And then we went to a place where you saw real bees and you had to find the queen!
And then Buddy and I went all the way up a tower!
Then we came down and were hungry!
We couldn't find Miss Kathy but we went in the car ate our lunch and then happily with full tummies went home!

Field Trip to Montshire Museum

Stephen was home from work today and joined us on a fabulous field trip to The Montshire Museum of Science in Vermont. We had a super time, and all of the kids enjoyed the engaging hands-on displays and activities. Even Baby Boy found something interesting to check out and experiment with at nearly every station. This trip brought back fond memories of my own experience (as a young homeschooled student) visiting this museum. I remembered so many of the displays that had fascinated me as a child. Sis plans to update you on some of the details when time permits. In the meantime, I'll post some pictures...

Our Trip Ice-skating By: Sis Age: 7

We went ice-skating for our first time!
Dad, Buddy and I were really excited and hopped into the car fast!
We could not wait because we had heard that at White Park you could rent skates there and Dad was especially excited because he didn't have skates!
(Buddy and I did have skates though!)
We were very excited and drove off to White Park!
When we got there we were a little disappointed because the skate house wasn't open at that time but Dad even though he still had his sneakers did skate anyway!
And so as beginners we started out with lots of falls but soon got the hang of it!
And when we did get the hang of it we went and we saw the skate house was open so we went there as fast as we could!
Then after Dad got his skates on it was his turn to fall!
But he learned a little faster then we did because he had skated before!
But the problem was if we were falling we couldn't hold on to him because we would pull him down to!
But we skated and soon got it!
We skated and we were able to skate fast but we still fell at the end!
So we skated for a long time and then Dad called Mom!
It was funny to see him on the ice with a cell-phone in his hand!
But then after that we skated for like 15 more minutes and headed home!
Then we dropped off Dad's skates and got in the car!
We enjoyed skating!

Providential Plumbing

This afternoon I enjoyed a brief respite from my teaching and housekeeping duties. My mom kindly offered to watch the kids so I could indulge in a half hour walk - to hear myself think and breathe some fresh January air. As I waddled my way up her road, I mused on this past week and the various challenges it has presented.

For some reason, we haven't been able to find our groove since Christmas vacation. This is due in part to all of the extra hours Stephen has worked (in anticipation of his upcoming trips to California). Our carefully planned schedule has failed time and again, and we have reached the end of many a 13-hour day feeling exhausted and overhwhelmed.

My reserves of energy and patience have been at an all time low as the kids and I have been cooped up inside, plugging away at prolonged school days and dealing with the antics and distractions of a bored 2 year old. Our resident "Picasso" has channeled his creative energies into redecorating our home. His handiwork has been found in the form of multi-colored tiles and elaborate murals on my walls. (Most parents just hide pills and sharp objects from their toddlers. I, on the other hand, must ban all pencils, crayons, paints and markers, - quite a challenge since every surface in our home is cluttered with school and art supplies). He has also channeled his boredom into dumping out everything he can get his hands on - toy bins, trash cans, math manipulatives, bags of crackers... How convenient that my vacuum cleaner broke just as this new habit emerged.

As I scaled snow banks and shivered my way along Primrose Lane, I considered my most recent Bible study in The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment. There was an odd analogy given which required quite a bit of mulling over before the meaning began to sink in. Burroughs spent nearly two pages comparing God's provision to pipes that run into our home. "A godly heart enjoys much of God in everything he has, and knows how to make up all wants in God Himself." He explains that "if the children of God have their little taken from them, they can make up all their wants in God himself...'The pipe is cut off,' says God, 'come to me, the fountain, and drink immediately...' Burroughs goes on to say, "...It may be, that is the reason why your outward comforts are taken from you, that God may be all in all to you. It may be that while you had these things they shared with God in your affection, a great part of the stream of your affection ran that way; God would have the full stream run to him now...when you enjoyed these things...a great deal of your affection ran waste...your (affections) are precious, and God would not have them to run waste; therefore he has cut off your other pipes that your heart might flow wholly to him." (Burroughs, pg. 66-67)

I might have dismissed this passage as interesting but somewhat irrelevent were it not for a tangile object lesson that God brought my way this week. Would you believe me if I told you that, with no warning, the water pipes in our home have gone completely bezerk? What a perplexing thing it is when you go to take a shower, and you're not sure what temperature of water (if any!) will come when you turn the faucet. And when you don't want water, it just seems to drip and pool in every place but where you need it. I nearly laughed out loud when the parallel between this nuisance of pipes and the challenges I'm up against in my day-to-day life hit me. How easy it would be, if things were always going smoothly, to dismiss my desperate need for God's help and intervention in every detail of my day and in the lives of my children. I have seen myself settle into subtle forms of spiritual laziness, where I presume upon God's goodness the way I assume that my faucets will provide water on demand. I pray that this lesson would not go to waste, that I would truly learn to draw my sustenance and significance from Him (not from my best-laid plans, accomplishments, or the blessings He brings along the way) and that "God may be all in all to me here in this world."

Our Day At The Library! By: Sis Age:7

Here is my story about going to the library . . . (By: Sis)

Our Day At The Library (By Sis) (Age: 7

________________________
Mama, Sis, Buddy, and Mama's Baby were going to the library!
They were going because they had read the list for this month, (January) there was a reading program! They were excited and headed off to the library to see what the program was like! They were all very happy and they all had rushed through school as quick as lighting to get there by 3:30! And sure enough when they got there they were happy because they were there early enough to chose out books and movies and so they did quickly and then they sat down to wait until it was time and started reading books and playing with the animals on the shelf! Then to their surprise nobody but them were there! They were all excited to do it though still! And that day was the day everybody went to vote! So the librarian got out a book and started reading it . . .
It was about being president! It was very cool and very fun! We were excited! It told what was good about being president and other things that are bad about being president! One good thing is that you get to live in the White House! Also one bad thing is that you have to dress up every day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And it also told us that each person had a hobby! Lots knew about music! And lots knew about dancing! And we learned that the tallest president was Abraham Lincoln! We also learned that there have been lots of animals in the White House! Including racoons, rabbits, and many other animals! There even has been a horse that camme up the elavator! It was a very funny book! It was very cool! And then when the librarian closed the book she picked up a very hard quiz! The librarian helped us do the questions and then she pulled out two prizes for Sis and Buddy! They were two cars that you could create and then they even have glue and paint in the package! Buddy has done those before and loves them! He got very excited and so did Sis! Then she pulled out paper that could stick and then she gave them to Sis Buddy and Mama's Baby! They were excited to see what they had to do on them! We were supposed to draw what person we wanted to be president and we had stickers, glitter, markers, and crayons to do it with! We all had lots of fun and created our posters and when we finished them and were satisfied with them then we all washed our hands and started to clean up! Then Sis went checked out the books put back the library cards in the puses and wallets and then she went helped clean up the rest of the mess and then after that we all left said Thank You So Much! And that we would bring back cousins to also do it and left happy!

Our Final Day of Christmas Vacation...

Today is our last day of school break. I had anticipated a day of laundry and cleaning and maybe a little Science prep when the phone rang. My mom (Grandma) was on the other end, calling to say that she had a crazy idea. How would we all like to pack our swimming gear and head over to the Holiday Inn for a morning of water fun with the kids? My brain spun out a bit as I tried to switch gears and imagine the amount of packing and bundling it would take to prepare my kids and myself for such an adventure. The kids (and Grandma) had enough enthusiasm for all of us, so, within record time, we dug out our swim toys and kickboards, found our bathing suits (mine was rather makeshift since my maternity suit disappeared), loaded up our woodstove, and hopped into the car. The thermometer registered 3 degrees F.

We had the greatest time! Mom and I took turns playing with the kids and swimming laps. What a pleasant change to feel weightless as I exercised! On the way home, Grandma surprised all of us with another treat - lunch at SubWay. Thoroughly tired from all of that play and satisfied with full tummies, we set home for rest time and a cozy movie by the woodstove. Thank you, Grandma, for giving us the best adventure we've had during this vacation week!

Our Last Day Of Christmas Break! By: Sis Age: 7

We have had a fun day today!
We had all eaten breakfast and we were going to start our chores when just then dad called!
He called and I (Sis) got to talk to him and so did Mom and Mama's Baby!
(Buddy didn't because he was in another room.)
We all talked to him and then the phone started getting fuzzy and Mom looked to see if anyone was calling and then she looked and she saw Grandma's phone number!
We talked to dad a little longer and then I turned off the phone and then Mom called Grandma!
Mom talked to Grandma and then she told Buddy and I to get ready to go swimming at the Holiday Inn!
We all got ready and then got the other stuff out and ready in the trunk and then we all got in and drove off to Grandma's house!
We picked her up and then we were laughing because the temp. was 3 below 0!
Then we drove off and we came into the parking lot and then we hurried down the stairs and then we went through the hall put Grandma's card in and hurried to the bathroom and changing-room to get into out bathing-suits!
We were happy and finally got all the coats and hats and mittens into the lockers and all our stuff and the swimming stuff and hurried to the pool!
We put our stuff on the holder for the other towls and changing stuff and then we quickly got into the water!
We were happy and excited because there was only 4 people there other then us!
Grandma, Buddy, and I all jumped under!
We were excited and not cold at all!
The water was warm!
Grandma and I started swimming with our floats!
Mama's baby was wondering where he was and wanted Mom until he saw a ball!
Mom walked over to the edge of the pool and the boys started playing ball instantly!
They were happy and Grandma watched them as Mom went and swam laps and then we swam a little more and did back-flips and somersaults in the water and back-floats in the water and then Grandma asked us if we wanted to go to the hot-tub with her!
We sat on the edge of the hot-tub and then we played with the bubbles for like 15 minutes and then Grandma and I went into the other pool!
Which when we went in it was now pretty cold!
We soon got used to it and then quickly the boys came in!
They soon got used to it!
And then we all played and the boys played ball again for awhile!
Then we gathered up all our stuff and quickly we all blow-dried our hair and changed!
Then we headed out to the elavator and then Grandma had told me a surprise that we told Mom in the car which was going to SubWay!
We all were very happy and said our orders!
We went inside ordered ate and then set out for Dunkin Doughnuts!
We got hot chocolate and then drank and then we went and brought Grandma home and said Thank You!
Then we said Good-bye!
And we headed home for rest-time!
We had a fun-time!

Happy New Year

It's New Year's Day - the beginning of 2008 and the end of a delightful week of vacation with Stephen. This week really has been a great balance of productivity and relaxation. We have puttered away at some projects (school prep, beginning phase one of our flooring project, catching up on correspondence and errands...), yet we have also relished cozy mornings of hanging out in our pajamas and playing games with the kids. I have started some pleasure reading (one of my resolutions for the new year)and have immersed myself in an inspiring homeschool text, The Well Trained Mind.

Baby Boy greets Stephen each morning with the groggy inquiry, "Daddy home? No work?" before he breathes a sigh of relief and settles in to play. He has savored every spare minute with his daddy; it will be quite an adjustment for him when we return to our regular routine.

We have hit a record of OVER 43 inches of snow in December alone!!! Our yard is so deep that the kids can scarcely walk in it. Stephen brought the big kids sledding over the weekend, and they had so much fun. There is a construction site down the road from us where there are MOUNTAINS of dirt that have become the most amazing sledding hills. We figured that it was worth the risk of getting kicked out just for the thrill of a few runs. ;) Lots of others have "trespassed" here as well with their sleds, snowboards, etc. We'll be disappointed if they ever get around to building anything on the land...

We had my parents and Adam over for a 5 course dinner (a belated Christmas gift) on Thursday. I spent a whole day cooking, cleaning and setting up, and it was so fun to put out a really special spread. After dinner we watched "Ratatouille" with the kids. It was such a cozy night and a treat so see Mom relax and enjoy being served for a change. She takes such good care of her 5 kids and (nearly) 12 grandchildren.

On Sunday night we finally made it over to my brother Matt's new home. This time it was our turn to be spoiled and fed a scrumptious meal. They served us Matt's legendary garlic soup, crusty bread, and pasta with venison sauce. He and Renee have done a BEAUTIFUL job refinishing their downstairs. It was fun to imagine the potential that our home will have once we finish our floors and paint our walls.

Speaking of which, I took some "BEFORE" pictures of our construction work. We are so excited to see our mangy carpets disappear and to anticipate beautiful, ALLERGEN-FREE floors!

As we approach this new year, we are so thankful for the big and the little blessings that God has brought into our lives and the time that we've had to slow down and marvel over His creativity. We can learn so much about His nature from the family He has placed us in - the love and security of a God-centered marriage, the giddy delight of kids who play in snow up to their chest, the cuteness of a toddler who learns to sing "Frosty the Snowman," and the precious kicks and squirms of new life growing inside my womb. I treasure each of these moments and praise God for another year to enjoy them.

The Twelve Hours of Christmas...

The kids were merciful and let us sleep 'til a reasonable hour Christmas morning. I'm not sure when Sis and Buddy got up, but they waited quietly in the basement until Baby Boy sounded the alarm. Then there was a stampede of little feet as they scrambled to greet us and begin the morning's festivities.

It always amazes me how so many months of shopping, planning and wrapping culminate in a mere twenty minute flurry of gift opening. I've always wished that we could freeze time and savor that excitement a little longer.

Sis and Buddy insisted that Baby Boy open his presents first. They helped him along and patiently interacted with him as he enjoyed each one. As for Baby, he would have just as soon been left alone with his first gift - a dollar store car chosen by Buddy.

Once the presents were all opened, we threw on some coats and traveled over the river and through the woods (literally!) to Grandma's house. She had a scrumptious hot breakfast waiting for us. My brothers and sister in law were there as well. Buddy is in awe of his Uncle Matt (the police officer) and was eager to show off his new toy gun and handcuffs. Grandma delighted the kids with some pretty amazing gifts (including moon shoes for Sis and remote controlled bumper cars for the boys). The trickiest part was getting the grownups to share.

After a quiet afternoon of naps and playtime, we headed out to the kids' favorite restaurant - the Red Apple Buffet. This is a dinner tradition we started a while back and which we look forward to every year. The kids are amazed by the concept of the buffet and filled/emptied their plates with zeal. I for one love the fact that I can satisfy all of my pregnancy cravings without having to lift a finger. (Who ever said that crab legs and chocolate ice cream don't make an excellent duo?).

Baby Boy put in his request for Christmas music on the way home. As we drove down Forest Lane, we were flooded with memories of last Christmas and our longing to be settled in our own house. We made so many trips down our road to enjoy the Christmas lights and to imagine living in such a peaceful and cozy neighborhood. This home has been all we dreamed it would be.

After we arrived home and put some logs on the fire, we snuggled up in our jammies and watched "Ratatouille," a gift we'd surprised the kids with.

Satisfied with a full day of fun and scrumptious food, the gifts drifted off to sleep. We certainly couldn't have asked for a more delightful Christmas! We are so thankful to God for all of His provision and for the good gifts he has given us.

Making Christmas Fudge
___________________________
Yesterday evening, Mommy
suggested that her kids , make fudge.
"Sis and Buddy, would you like to help me make fudge?" she asked.
"Yes!" they replied. They helped Mommy get the ingredients and read the recipe.
"Can I help stir?" Buddy asked. Mommy said yes.
When the fudge was cool, Mommy asked, "Sis, will you get a Ziplock bag and put
the fudge in it?" Finally the fudge was packed away and put in the freezer.

Getting Ready for Christmas By: Sis Age: 7

We have gotten ready for Christmas!
It has been fun!
Three stockings are hung up!
My one is at the top!
Buddy's stocking is below mine at the left!
Mama's Baby's stocking is below mine on the right!
We have a big window so we put our Christmas tree right in front of the window!
And we put Mom's dolls up on the window sill!
I even have one of the doll's as my own!
We got out to a shop that is called Annalee Dolls!
We go out with my Grandpa!
Another decoration we put up is outside in front of our house hanging in the front of our house!
We also made a candy wreath!
We bought peppermints from the store and we also bought some different kinds of candy!
And we bent a hanger into the shape of a circle!
And then we bought string and some red ribbon.
Then we took some scissors.
And we took some of the string about 4 inches wide and then we took a piece of candy and we tied the string around it two times and then we made sure we pulled it tight.
And then we tied it around the hanger two times.
And we repeated this again and again and then we finally at the end took the wreath and cut of the hanger and we used wire cutters to do that.
Then we took the ribbon and used only a little bit of the ribbon and then we tied it just like you would a shoe.
And we are happy that we made our very first candy wreath!

Our Family Christmas Letter

As our little ones eagerly decorated our Christmas tree, I couldn’t help but reminisce about last year’s holiday season. We were buried in moving boxes, and I was nominated for the “worst mother ever” award after packing away our miniature, fake Christmas tree BEFORE Christmas even arrived! This year we find ourselves snuggling up by the fire place in our own living room and marveling over a year’s worth of blessings – not the least of which is our cozy little house on Forest Lane. As I type this, Sis and Buddy are sledding in their very own backyard – a little haven nestled into the woods. We are so thankful for this home which has provided the simple luxuries we’ve always dreamed of – a swing set, sandbox, a vegetable garden, and plenty of room for the kids to ride their bikes, play and explore.

This fall has been busy with activities including soccer, a World Cultures class and dramatic production through our homeschool Enrichment Center, several field trips and gymnastics. Most of our extra commitments have come to a close, and we are looking forward to a winter of hibernation and quiet hours of reading and learning as a family.

We are expecting another Little Arrival in April. Sis (age 7) and Buddy (age 6) are delighted with the prospect of a new brother or sister. They watch my growing belly with pride and ask to read about our baby’s weekly development in my pregnancy book. Mama's Baby, on the other hand, just giggles at my “nice full tummy” and thinks I’ve eaten too many bananas like Curious George. He has been doted on by his older siblings for 2 years and is in for some character-building adjustments when New Baby arrives.

We wish you all a blessed Christmas season!

The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment...

I am part of a ladies' Bible study in our church, and we are working through the book entitled The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment, by Jeremiah Burroughs. Reading this book has been both an exciting and painful process. Exciting because, for the first time, I'm viewing this "mystery of contentment" as an ornament worth striving for. Discouraging because I see how miserably I fall short. I want to both laugh and cry as I relate to Burroughs' description of those who make a business out of "murmering, repining, vexing and fretting." He contrasts the spirit of these people with the following description: "Christian contentment is that sweet, inward, quiet, gracious frame of spirit, which freely submits to and delights in God's wise and fatherly disposal in every condition." I expect that this will be a lifetime process for me to fully attain, but I am excited to begin...

Benjamin Franklin By: Sis Age: 7

We have been learning about Benjamin Franklin.
Streets were named after him eventually!
But he was poor for a long time and then he became an apprentice.
I will give you more information later.
Benjamin (also known as Ben) lived on a street called Milk Street.
Here are some of the things Ben would be named after . . .
Streets, Towns, Counties, Colleges, Libraries, Hotels, Banks, Ships, Stoves, Stores, A football field, and a flowering tree.
Ben's father didn't care if he was rich. He didn't give it a thought.
Ben's last name was Franklin.
Mr. Franklin, (Ben's father) was a leather apron man.
(That means, he works with his hands and has a trade.)
Mr. Franklin made soap and candles.
Ben's brother Samuel was already a blacksmith.
The oldest son in the Franklin home was always a blacksmith.
Ben's brother James would be a printer.
Three other brothers would be trained to make soap and candles. The remaining four brothers died young. Two died as babies. Josiah Ben's brother and Ebenezer Ben's brother were drowned.
Josiah ran away and was drowned at sea.
Sixteen month Ebenezer ran away and was drowned in a tub of his father's soap suds.
Ben was the tenth and last of Mr. Franklin's 10 sons.
Ben was very smart.
Mr. Franklin thought Ben should be a preacher.
He would go to Latin school and then college and then climb up into a pulpit and make his father proud.
When he was 7 years old off he went to Latin School.
Some preachers went around with holes in their shoes.
Mr. Franklin decided it would be to much money so he took Ben out of Latin school and put him in a ordinary reading and writing school for to years.
When Benjamin was 10 Mr. Franklin took him out of school altogether.
He was old enough now to run errands for him.
To delver soap to dip candles.
When he was 12 years old, they'd decide what kind of leather apron man he would be.
Then he'd become an apprentice and learn the trade.
And no wonder he had to say that he would become an apprentice and would obey his master until he was 21 years old.
When Ben was 12 years old he told his father that he might go to sea.
His father didn't care for that idea. Look what happened to his brother Josiah.
Ben didn't care for soap and candles.
Besides look hat happened to his brother Ebenezer and the soap suds.
Ben knew his father had a good business.
His candles sold well.
Even the night watchmen carried Mr. Franklin's candles around.
There was however one thing wrong with the business, it smelled.
Mr. Franklin took Ben to different shops.
Mr. Franklin talked Ben into being an apprentice to his brother James.
Now Ben was stuck until he was 21.
James thought Ben was vain and argumentative.
He treated been strictly if not more strictly then the other apprentices.
Ben could not bear to think of all those years gone to waste.
He would read.
He would write.
As a starter he tried writing a poem.
It was a long poem about the capture of Blackbeard the pirate.
He showed it to his father.
His father thought it was a terrible poem.
Later he would write letters to Jame's office signing them Silence Dogood.
Ben read a book about vegetarianism and decided to quit eating meat.
He asked James to give him cash in what he would usually pay or his meals.
James agreed.
Now Ben could not only eat alone he could read while he ate.
Now he could also save some money for books.
Many times a meal was only a biscuit, a handful of raisins, and a glass full of water.
Once Ben read a book about swimming.
He learned some fancy tricks and strokes.
He learned to swim on his belly while holding both hands still, to carry his left leg in his right hand, to show both his hands and feet out of the water.
To swim with his legs tied together,to sit in the water, to cut his toenails in the water, to show 4 parts out of the water at the same time, to swim holding up one leg, to put on boots in the water, and to leap like a goat.
In order to swim faster he tried out an idea of his own. He made wooden paddles for his hands and feet.
He went faster but the paddles were heavy so he didn't get far.
Then he tried lying on his back, holding a kite string so the kite could pull him across the pond.
Ben read a book on how to argue.
The author said that a person should not flatly contradict another person.
Instead he should be polite and ask questions until at last he had brought his opponent around to contradicting himself.
Ben tried this and it did work.
When Ben was 17 Ben ran away.
He boarded a boat and left for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
He was free!
He bought a new suit of clothes, and a watch with a long gold watchchain.
When he had saved enough he went to Boston to see his family.Ben stopped at the printshop to show off.
He walked in and twriled his watchchain and jingled the money in his pockets.
James was so angry it took years for him to recover.
In Philedalpheia Ben married a woman named Debbie.
Ben Ben was 24 years old.
He had his own printshop now.
He made up lots of inventions.

We had everyone over to our house for Thanksgiving for the second time!!!

We were excited!!!
But then Grandma and Grandpa came early and then Grandma said "Lets see if everyone else comes early!!!!"
And then all of the sudden Auntie Sharon came early and Grandma said "Lets see if Auntie Donna comes early and then all of the sudden Auntie Donna walks in and Mom was still not ready!!!
But everybody came cause all the radio stations were saying there would be traffic!

"Opening the Door" - a play inspired by the life of William Tyndale

During the past 10 weeks, the kids and I have been living in 16th century England, rubbing shoulders with the court of Henry VIII and learning about the life and work of William Tyndale (who translated the Scriptures into English). We had the opportunity to participate in an immense theatrical production, inspired by this historical era. This play consisted of 12 scenes - transporting the audience from the palace of England to the poor homes and prisons in Belgium. It included several musical pieces from the Renaissance era, a masquerade dance, and (my personal favorite)a court jester scene.

My role was to choreograph the court jester act, where 14 bouncing children in authentic costumes each had a chance to perform a creative stunt. I also taught them 2 songs, including a round of "Dona Nobis Pacem." I have not been gifted with a large dose of creativity or any musical talent, so both of these endeavors were challenging to say the least.

On the night of the performance, the kids were as confident as could be! They sang their hearts out and performed their stunts with so much energy and "cuteness" that the audience went wild. I was so proud of them.

Now it's time to switch gears and think about Thanksgiving. We will be hosting the Piercey crew (20 people total), and I'm very excited about my menu... This is the first chance we've had to host a large family gathering since we lived in our Northfield apartment. What a lot we have to be thankful for!

Just wanted to add a note about our "new" vehicle. It's so easy to get excited about a provision like this and then, as months go by, to forget all about it. Both of our cars were having problems at once. The kids' seatbelts were broken in Stephen's commuter car, and the little Hyundai I drove started making some startling noises (sounded like the bottom was going to fall out). That left us with NO family car. We couldn't even drive to church and had to go through all sorts of gymnastics to borrow my mom's car for weekly commitments. I felt more discouraged than I had in a while, knowing that there was no way we could afford to fix our car AND think about buying another vehicle that would fit our growing family. It was no mistake that the kids and I read in Exodus that week. It occured to me that my prayers must have sounded like those of the Israelites. No sooner were their feet dry from the Red Sea then they were whining to God about their need for food and fresh water. It was as if the miracles hadn't even happened!

Well, we received a call from one of the deacons who "just happened" to have inherited a nice, new vehicle from a family member and didn't know what to do with his 6 passenger Taurus wagon!!! He said that he had been the recipient of so much generosity over the years and that he wanted to GIVE the Taurus to us!!! Can you believe it?! It was so neat to be able to show the kids this tangible example of God's provision. If this gift hadn't come our way, we would have had to take on another car payment when we are already tight financially. That would have added YEARS to our debt-elimination plan...

This incident was such an encouragement to me and Stephen. We went over the "history" of our last 8 years together and the ways in which God has provided for us against all odds. We realized that we have lived in 6 homes, have been in 4 churches, have lost 6 cars, have worked 7 jobs and have juggled classes for most of the first 5 years together (while having a few children, I might add :).

Good Thing These Kids are So Darn Cute...

Every now and then I just have to run for my "funny quote notebook" to record some of the things these little rascals come out with.

The kids were watching "Sound of Music" yesterday. The nuns bowed their heads, and Sis asked what they were doing. Buddy answered, "They're praying to Allah!"

Sis and I were having a heart to heart during one of our Mother/daughter outings. She was chattering in the backseat, and somehow the subject of schools came up. She said, "If I ever went to school, I'd want to go to one of those biblical schools like Aunt Krista's kids. That school would be good 'cause I KNOW she wouldn't send them to a trashy school."

We were reading in Exodus about when God wrote the 10 commandments. I said, "Guys did you know that God wrote them with his finger?" Buddy piped in, "Well, not REALLY his finger. His SPIRITUAL hand..."

I told the kids that it was really hard to keep the secret about my pregnancy during all of those early months when I was so sick every day. Sis said, "Yeah, I wondered what the heck you were doing..."

Buddy (always one to conserve energy) said that he would not want to work on a farm when he grows up because it would be "way too much work for him and all of his WIVES." ?!?!

Baby Boy was trying to snuggle up to me in my bed, but his brother had stolen his spot. He didn't miss a beat, crawled over Buddy and said, "SHOO BUG!"

He does have a softer side. Yesterday he rewarded Sis when she carried in a load of wood with a heartwarming, "Thank you, dear girl!"

Baby Boy is also our most cautious and fearful child. He was TERRIFIED of sitting in our new car the first day after we got it. We tried to coax him into his car seat, and he got so upset that he threw up! We abandoned the cause and put him back in the Camry where he immediately calmed down. I said to him, "Were you a little scared?" He answered, "Mmhmm. I frew up!"

The other night, Sis was chasing Buddy around with a medicine dropper, saying, "Just take it! Just take it!" I snapped to attention and asked her WHAT ON EARTH she was giving him. Buddy rolled his eyes and said, "She makes me take my cold medicine EVERY night, and I don't even have a SPECK of sickness."
I remembered that Sis had been allowed to measure his cold medicine weeks before that. Evidently she thought she was treating her brother for a chronic condition...

Baby Boy has been singing up a storm lately. His favorite song has been "Christus Vincit" which he learned from our Latin CD. Recently he has been working on "Let's Go Fly a Kite" which he sings quite well (with Sis' constant encouragement)
Another one of his favorite activities is cleaning. He follows me arround with the swiffer saying, "Too messy! Too messy!!"

When his brother or sister call to him, Baby Boy often responds, "One sec, I'm BUSY!" He keeps a pretty tight schedule for a 2 year old. :)

Buddy was asked to make his bed. He came to me in exasperation, saying, "Mommy, I CAN'T make my bed because my sheets are off course!"

Sis was eager to share the news from our last ultra sound. She called up her cousin Lydia and informed her, "Daddy's pretty sure our baby has a penis, and girls don't have those!"

Buddy came to me with a look of concern the other day. He had been reading the bottle on Sis' allergy medication. He said, "Mommy, why does this say that it 'May Cause DISEASE?'" I explained that it said "dizziness," not disease. Sis was quite touched by her brother's concern for her wellbeing and said, "Oh, Mommy, you should put that on the blog!"

The Thanksgiving Story By Sis Age 7

The Pilgrims did not agree with the church in England!!!!
So they went to Holland.
That was also too crowded so they made a deal with merchants and they made a trade with them!!!!
So they then went to America on the Mayflower which the merchants helped them buy!!!!
_________________________________________________________________________________
Pilgrims arrive in America with no homes no nothing they did not know how to plant anything.
They did not know how to hunt either.
They prayed for help. GOD sent Squanto to teach them . . .
He taught them how to plant and he showed them also how to plant corn . . .
He showed them how to poke a hole in the ground and then put fish in the hole then finally you put in the seed.
The Pilgrim's also thought Lobsters were a gift from God!!!!!!
________________________________________________________________________________
Good crop and then they decided to celebrate with a feast!!!!
Cheif Massosoit brought deer as a gift.
(Because the Indians also were there)
Some of the foods they ate were these. . .
Venison, duck, seafood, cabbage,
onions, corn squash and No Turkey!!!!!!!
Almost a week long feast!!!!!
They played games and maybe some of the Indian children and the Pilgrim children played Blind Man's Bluff.

All Sorts of News

It has only been a few weeks since I've written, yet I hardly know where to begin to catch up on all that's happened...

I'll start with our biggest news: We are expecting!! This isn't "new news" to us, but, after a very sick and exhausting first trimester, we are sharing the joyful announcement with others. What a delight it was to hear this Little One's heartbeat and to enjoy the kids' reactions when we told them. Buddy was ecstatic. Sis was reserved initially; it always takes her a while to process big stuff like this. Now she is as pleased as could be and shows her care by bringing me breakfast in bed each morning. She did say, "Mom, it would really stink if you had another boy!"

Baby Boy turned two today. We celebrated this occasion by bringing him to a petting zoo/farm yesterday. He was breathless with delight over all of the animals he could touch, feed, and hug and the tractor/train ride through the corn mazes. He repeated the animals names (including llama and camel). This adventure was second only to his last birthday which we spent in Disney World. :)

Stephen was in San Diego last week on business. It was the first time we have been separated as a family in over 7 years. Buddy wept and clung to Stephen for about an hour the night before he left. Sis made heartbreaking comments like, "Daddy, we can hardly bear to wait until 6:00 for you to come home from work. How are we going to wait 4 days?!" Baby Boy was quite forlorn as well. Once he discovered the wonders of speaker phones, he kept running up and pressing the button, hoping that his Daddy would be on the other end. Our reunion on Thursday was as joyful as our parting was pitiful. We calculated that we had about 160 hugs to catch up on and got right to work. Baby Boy said again and again, "Plane all gone! Daddy home." Stephen can have no question about how much his family loves and appreciates him.

This week marks the end of soccer season. We have enjoyed seeing the kids' progress but are more than ready for a calmer schedule around here. I'm going to do my best to include some pictures; however, my computer has rebelled at previous efforts.

The Day At The Apple Orchard By Sis Age 7

We went to the apple orchard!!!!!!!!!!

And we were squeezed in with oher people and on top of that we almost fell off!!
But this year we had sides and we were not squeeze in with other people!!!
We were glad about that!!!!
And we did not fall off!!!!
We got enough apples we could make apple Dumplings enough for everyone and then we could have like 7 other apples to eat!!!
It was great!!
And we learned they had a fan that blew on the apple trees like a windmill!!!
It was a ton of fun!!!
And we got maple lollipops and some fudge!!!!!!!!
